Kauai, Hawaii: Travel Tips

Popularly referred to as Hawaii’s Island of Discovery and the ”Garden Island,” Kauai’s landscape is primarily covered in tropical rainforest, making it the perfect destination for lovers of nature, outdoor adventures, and Polynesian culture. At 5.8 million years old, Kauai is Hawaii’s oldest major island and features miles of scenic beaches and lush mountains, waterfalls, and rivers. Whether you’re visiting Kauai for the first time or making a return visit, here are three spots to add to your Kauai itinerary.

Go snorkeling off Na Pali Coast.

In addition to one of the oldest and most protected reef ecosystems in Hawaii, Kauai features some of the most beautiful sea cliffs and sea caves in the world—so don’t miss your chance to see them from the water. Snorkeling in Kauai is a fun, easy, and safe way to explore the diverse sea life found in Kauai’s coral reefs. Some of Kauai’s best snorkeling spots can be found on the remote Na Pali Coast, which is only accessible by boat.

With schools of vibrant tropical fish, Hawaiian green sea turtles, and algae growing on the coral reefs, snorkeling in the Na Pali Coast is a one-of-a-kind experience. During the winter months, you might even catch a glimpse of Hawaii’s winter visitors, the humpback whales. With steps leading into the water, all gear included, and a friendly crew, Capt. Andy’s Kauai snorkeling tours are ideal for the entire family.

Drive along Kauai’s North Shore.

No Kauai vacation would be complete without a scenic drive along the North Shore. Travel guides differ about where the shore begins—while some insist that anything north of Kapaa is a part of the North Shore, others maintain that it begins in Anahola and others say it begins in Kilauea.

If you’re renting a car, you can reach Kauai’s North Shore by heading north on Highway 56 from Lihue until you pass the Wailua River. A trip down the Wailua River is a picturesque two-hour adventure for first-time visitors, and many tourists embark on Kauai sea tours during their visit.

When heading to North Shore, take a left off Highway 56 onto Kuamo’o Road at the old Coco Palms Resort. Up the road, you can visit Opaekaa Falls and the breathtaking overlook of the Wailua River Valley. From the valley, double back on Highway 56 and head to Kauai’s North Shore.

Visit the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge.

As a sugar plantation town in the 1880s, Kilauea once housed the workers of the Kilauea Sugar Company. With plantation workers from China, Japan, and the Philippines, Kilauea remains a unique melting pot of cultures today.

The Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge is on a peninsula bluff and features dramatic panoramic ocean views. The Lighthouse, a historic landmark at the center of the Wildlife Refuge, sits on the northernmost spot in all of the Hawaiian Islands.

As part of the Wildlife Refuge, the Lighthouse features an abundance of native seabirds and species of exotic fish, including albatross, boobies, and nene geese. Binoculars are provided at the visitor center, so visits can try to spot spinner dolphins or humpback whales offshore. If you’re interested in learning more about native species and Kauai geology, consider taking a guided hike up nearby Crater Hill.Whether you’re planning to take a helicopter tour over Kauai or hike Waimea Canyon, pack your smartphone or DSLR to document Kauai’s lush rainforests and picturesque ocean views. Before embarking on your adventure, consider investing in a digital photo storage device to store your vacation photos. Innovative digital photo storage devices, like ibi, offer unlimited storage for pictures and videos, so you don’t have to worry about carrying an external hard drive or deleting family photos to free up storage space.

Islamorada is world-renowned for flats, fly, backcountry, Everglades and all Florida Keys fishing. The best way to see the Florida Keys is on an Islamorada fishing charter. Whether we’re offshore fishing in the open water or poling through the peaceful Islamorada backcountry, you’ll likely enjoy the scenery as much as the fishing experience.

From family-oriented “catch fish” trips to technical, educated Islamorada fly fishing charters for bonefish, we have the skill and patience to accommodate everyone. Our professional, polite and friendly fishing guides have what it takes to provide an unforgettable day on the water.

Our boats are equipped with fresh brined ballyhoo, live bait, and tall towers, which may it easier to spot a Mahi near the surface. Mahi Mahi is actually the Hawaiian name for this fish translating from the Polynesian word for strong. The Spanish name for this fish is Dorado meaning golden. In English, the common name used is Dolphin fish, but we often refer to this fish as Mahi in order to avoid confusion with the Dolphin which is a mammal and not a fish.  Often customers inquiring about a charter ask, “just how far do you have to go to catch a Mahi?” and honestly it all depends on the weather conditions and the fish. Sometimes the Mahi can be 8-10 miles out, and other days it might take 30+ miles to find them. They are always on the move so every day is different.

When our Captains are heading offshore, they look for floating debris, a nice weed line full of sargassum, or birds working in the area. Floating debris or a large weed line will hold small bait fish that Mahi love to eat. Once they come up to the debris or weed line, if fish are not visible, the Captain usually trolls two naked ballyhoo anywhere from 5-8 knots. Just because fish aren’t visible at first, doesn’t mean they aren’t there. But if the Captain doesn’t see fish or get a bite within the first few minutes, it’s often best to move on.

Did you know that the Indian River Lagoon is the Most diverse estuary in North America, with over 700 species of fish. The Indian River Lagoon actually groups together three lagoons. Approximately an hour is all that stands in your way of an amazing experience. That’s right, the beautiful Indian River Lagoon is about an hour or less drive from top destinations in central Florida including Orlando and Walt Disney World and is minutes away from the Kennedy Space Center. Travel at Christmas: here’s where to go

Whether you travel alone or in company, whether you go with friends, as a couple or with your family, the Christmas holidays are the perfect time to go in search of new destinations to discover. In December, Christmas lights are omnipresent almost everywhere. The spirit of the festivals can be felt in the squares and streets of many cities, one more reason to visit them, or why not, to discover the Christmas markets. Therefore, for those who have not yet decided where to go for Christmas, it is time to explore the best destinations for Christmas holidays.

Christmas trips between the UK and India

The moment you decide on a destination for the Christmas holidays, you need to think about the features we want to find in the destination. Definitely chasing the magical atmosphere of lights, markets and Christmas carols is important. Just as it is important to choose to exchange gifts in the heat and in the sun. In the first case the ideal destination becomes therefore Edinburgh, where the colorful kilts, the majestic castles and the sound of the bagpipes will add a touch of magic to the most beautiful day of the year. Not to mention Hogmanay, the craziest and funniest New Year in the UK

If, on Christmas, you are looking for the typical summer heat that we lack, why not think of a trip to Rajasthan in India? Christmas will be so colorful and fragrant with spices. It would be nice to walk among the streets of the red city of Jaipur, the blue one of Jodhpur and the white of Udaipur … and before the sight of the Taj Mahal we certainly won’t miss the panettone!

Walk between Innsbruck and Florence

However, there are those who believe that Christmas remains the same synonym of cold, sweaters and scarves. While wanting to go far, there are those who do not want to give up the markets full of junk to stick to the tree, street food and hot chocolate. Few indeed prefer a warm Christmas on the beach. In this sense, there are beautiful European cities, all festively decorated and full of lights, such as Innsbruck.

You can not then not consider Florence with all its illuminated windows, in particular that of La Rinascente, the large tree set up in Piazza del Duomo, the Santa Croce market where decorations for all tastes can be found. Whatever the destination, however, remember that the trip will taste much sweeter, and a much smoother course if you use the services of

Going to Siena? Here’s what you should see

Siena is one of the most famous locations of Tuscany, perhaps of the whole Italy, and its popularity is confirmed by the hundreds of tourists that come there every year. The city is widely known for the Palio, the illustrious horse race, for its narrow streets and for its history. Not surprisingly, Siena is listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO. However, if you are planning to go on a trip there, you’d better know that making a list of things to see is not simple, since the city has this much to offer. But don’t worry, we are here to help you!

Piazza del Campo

This magnificent square is the core of Siena’s city center and the starting point for every visitor. With its characteristic shell-shape, it is one of the largest medieval squares in the world but its relevance is not only due to architectural and artistic factors. In fact, Piazza del Campo has been the headquarters of political and social life since 1300 and, not surprisingly, hosts the Palio every year. But this place could not be this beautiful and fascinating without the Fonte Gaia, a marvellous fountain that emerges at the top of the square.

The Cathedral

Looking at Siena’s cathedral from the outside is already a unique experience, since the building showcases a black and white facade that is pure joy for the eyes. However, its best part is the interior, where you will be able to observe a magnificent floor depicting esoteric symbols and religious stories, the Piccolomini library with frescoes by the famous painter Pinturicchio and, last but not least, the Piccolomini Chapel, by all means one of the most important pieces of evidence of Michelangelo’s work.

Siena’s nightlife

Either you are staying in a hotel in the city or you chose to go for a villa rental siena, you must try Siena’s night life at least once. This might sound surprising for those who thought that this article was going to focus on the most enriching, cultural experiences you can have in Siena. Point is, the city’s nightlife is unique and it is probably worth sacrificing a morning of site seeing. Thanks to the many students, the atmosphere is always lively, with breweries, wineries and bars ready to welcome you. However, Siena’s nightlife is not only made for youngsters. In fact, it offers many theatrical performances and musical events, together with spectacles on the streets.

Siena National Gallery

As the ultimate step in your trip to Siena let’s go back to more traditional stuff. The city’s National Gallery is an amazing building dating back to the 15th century. Located in the historical center (just south of Piazza del Campo), it hosts a superb local art collection with artworks that were made between the 12th and the 16th century. “Raising of Lazarus” and “Entry into Jerusalem” are probably the most famous paintings in the gallery and are priceless for any art lover. Paying a visit to Siena’s National Gallery is not only an experience for your senses, it is the best way to come closer to the city’s tradition and history.
